Information on legal weddings in France
We’re not the experts on this but we know that there are certain conditions that apply to getting married in France. First the easy bit – in France only a civil wedding is legally binding. You can only have a religious or symbolic ceremony after a civil ceremony. The civil wedding can take place either in France or in your home country, in which case you will need to bring the documents with you when you come to France for your wedding. Once you are married in France, the marriage is legally binding in UK and Irish law
To be legally married you must get in touch directly with the local Mairie (Mayor’s Office) at least 10 days prior to your planned wedding date – for Chateau de Fayolle the local Mairie is in Villetoureix.
The following conditions apply:
· At least one of you must reside in France for a minimum of 30 days before a marriage application can be made - proof of residence will be required
· The bride must be at least 15 years old and the groom 18 years old
· The bride and groom must give their consent (minors under 18 years of age must produce written consent of both parents or their legal guardian - If the parents or guardians are not resident in France, their signature needs to be witnessed by a French Consular Officer)
· The bride and groom must not have any close family relationship or ties with each other.
If you want to get married in a stunning French chateau, do not despair over the residency requirements. You can still have a symbolic or religious wedding at Chateau de Fayolle provided you have a civil wedding ceremony in the UK first and can provide the documentation to the local Mairie. To your guests, your wedding ceremony in France will be the day when you and your partner are joined in matrimony.
We strongly recommend that you consult the Consulate or French Embassy for direct information as rules and laws are subject to change. For the latest information please use the General Consulate in London
